The driving force of the film though is the performance by Ranveer Singh. He was born to play this part and the way he raps his soul out in the film, makes it a killer set. He breathes life, despair, euphoria and belief into his role. A line in the film where MC Sher tells Murad says, ‘Tere andar toofan hai’ and that is bang on. With every new performance, the actor brings in a tidal wave of surprises. Equally brilliant is Alia Bhatt, in a small, but deeply impactful role. The actress brings effortless ease into the fiery eccentricities of her character. The chemistry between Ranveer and Alia is cute, lovable and fiery, too.

Alia Bhatt brings her effusive charm on screen in Gully Boy. She does not have a lot to do in the film and that’s a real shame. Safina’s story is not fleshed out in Gully Boy. Sure, the film is on Ranveer’s character, but we deserved more of Alia. In her limited screentime, the Bhatt kid shows what stuff she is made of. She beats up girls who try to flirt with her boyfriend. She is a feisty Muslim girl who neither the hijab nor the walls of her house can restrict. For every door that is slammed on her face, she finds a window to get ahead. Metaphorically and otherwise.

Gully Boy is unconventional in terms of its setting and the larger issues of class perceptions and social prejudices that it addresses, but its central narrative construct – a defiant underdog fighting daunting odds in a bid to become a rap star – traverses familiar ground. Gully Boy does not subvert the conventions of the genre, which restricts the game within a predictable arc.

All said and done, Gully Boy is a once-in-a-blue-moon film! There rarely comes a film that perfects almost everything. This is an interpretation of emotions at its best. It’s not all about rap music, it’s about humanness and achieving your dreams. Don’t wait for the reviews, just go and experience it yourself.
