The performances are consistent throughout and it’s delightful to see such talented actors feed off each other. Kangana Ranaut is brilliant as Bobby, as she seamlessly gets under the skin of her character, nailing the quirks and nuances. Even her styling makes a statement without going overboard. Rajkummar Rao, fits into his slightly macho, edgy persona like a glove. We haven’t seen him in a role like this before and he pulls it off fantastically.

Prakash Kovelamudi’s direction is appropriate and he uses his technical knowledge well. The film is very stylishly narrated which goes with its theme and also the title. In a few scenes, he shows his brilliance but goes over the top in the second half’s pre-climax especially. Also, a few scenes might seem difficult to digest, particularly the scene where Bobby confronts Keshav. He was treading line with this film and sadly, he trips at places and this affects the impact.

Kangana plays the fidgety female protagonist with aplomb. Reflections of the star’s real-life run-ins with influential members of the industry and segments of the media are too obvious to be missed. Her character in the film exists on the fringes of the movie industry. She rues the paucity of genuine opportunities to prove her worth as an actress while many less talented than her rule the roost.

Director Prakash Kovelamudi, with this film, has done something unique for Bollywood. We’ve seen good looking pictures with a smart narrative, but this has an outright crazy plot backed with a skilful direction. There’s a lot of stressful things happening in the story, but the director makes sure they at least look good. Mixing the blood with Holi’s gulaal, playing mind-blowingly with the lights, it’s a mixture Prakash has maintained throughout the film.

There’s a great deal of craft going on alongside in the film. Some dips aside, this is grown-up writing, making no allowance for dummies (when it starts to explain things too much, in fact, it detracts from the dreamy, trance-like, near nightmarish atmosphere in some parts). The psychedelic, surreal touches are marvelous, with some characters flitting in and out of Bobby’s head: are they real or imaginary? A sequence in which Bobby and gang go wandering in the grungier parts of London town is suffused with inspired lunacy. We never relax, and are always on edge, just as the film intends for us to be.

Judgementall Hai Kya plays with the mind, and that’s its USP. Kovelamudi’s narrative is quirky, trippy, crisp and keeps you on the edge throughout. It’s not your usual whodunnit thriller because Judgementall Hai Kya moves beyond suspense and delves into something deeper.Through Bobby and Keshav, Kovelamudi gives an insight into a world that many are unaware of. An unapologetic acceptance of oneself. While the first half is entertaining, intriguing and engaging, the second half is a tad bit stretched. Despite being a 121 minute film, Kolevamudi makes the second half a tiring affair.
